Magic Attunement. The cheron has advantage on Intelligence (Arcana) checks to identify magical effects or items. It can sense the presence of magic within 30 feet of it, as if using the Detect Magic spell without expending a spell slot.

Innate Spellcasting. The cheron’s spellcasting ability is Wisdom (spell save DC 14, +6 to hit with spell attacks). It can innately cast the following spells, requiring no material components:

  • At will: Mage Hand, Message, Minor Illusion
  • 3/day each: Calm Emotions, Shield
  • 1/day: Counterspell

Telepathic Bond. The cheron can establish a telepathic link with one willing creature it touches. While linked, the cheron and the creature can communicate telepathically over any distance on the same plane, and the cheron can sense the creature’s emotions. The link lasts until the cheron ends it as a bonus action or forms a new bond with another creature.

Empathic Resonance. As a bonus action, the cheron can bolster an ally within 30 feet that it can see. The ally gains advantage on their next attack roll, ability check, or saving throw made before the start of the cheron’s next turn. The cheron can use this feature three times per long rest.

Loyal Companion. The cheron has advantage on saving throws against effects that would force it to act against an ally it is bonded with via Telepathic Bond.

Actions

Arcane Spark. Melee or Ranged Spell Attack: +6 to hit, reach 5 ft. or range 60 ft., one target. Hit: 7 (1d6 + 4) force damage.

Empathic Surge (Recharge 5–6). The cheron projects a wave of psychic energy in a 15-foot cone. Each creature in the area must succeed on a DC 14 Wisdom saving throw or take 10 (3d6) psychic damage and become stunned until the end of their next turn. Allies bonded with the cheron via Telepathic Bond have advantage on this saving throw.

Lore

Cherons hail from the Feywild, where they dwell in enchanted glades suffused with raw magical energy. They are said to be born from the dreams of ancient archmages, their essence tied to the Weave itself. In the Material Plane, cherons are rare and often seek out powerful spellcasters to serve as companions, drawn by their innate connection to magic. They are fiercely protective of their chosen allies, using their telepathic and empathic gifts to guide and comfort them.

Tactics

Cherons prefer to avoid direct combat, relying on their flight and Shield spell to stay out of harm’s way. They use Arcane Spark to harry enemies from a distance and Empathic Surge to disable groups of foes. Their Empathic Resonance ability is used to bolster allies at critical moments, and they often stay near their bonded ally to maximize the benefits of their Telepathic Bond.

Roleplaying Notes

  • Cherons are curious and empathetic, often sensing the emotions of those around them before speaking. They may finish their allies’ sentences or respond to unspoken thoughts, which can be both endearing and unnerving.
  • They are fiercely loyal but can be wary of strangers, using their Insight to gauge intentions.
  • A cheron might act as a moral compass for its allies, urging caution or compassion through telepathic whispers.
